What is Informatics?
- Concise definition: The intersection of the arts, sciences, and professions, where digital tools are used to at once extend and unify these domains.
in the context of a specific discipline
- Investigate the structure, properties, and content of information
- Develop optimal methods for collections, synthesizing, analyzing, storing, and disseminating data
- Extract meaning from data
- Data is increasing
- Information capacity is increasing
- A large technical and cultural divide frequently separates practitioners from the professional problems they are seeking to address
- 90% of all hospitals today are paper-based
- Informatics seeks to bridge this gap through advanced training grounded in the discipline
- In the past, 1 experiment could look at 1 gene and yield 10 data points.
- Now, 1 experiment can simultaneously look at 10,000 genes (opportunity) yielding 10,000,000 data points (challenge)
- Data -> Information -> Knowledge
- Informatics is not just some domain knowledge plus some computer science
- It is a synthesis of domain knowledge with specialized tools developed for the discipline
- Bioinformatics
- Cheminformatics
- Health Informatics
- Music Informatics
- Use IT for discipline-specific purposes
- Commodification
- Integration
- Convergence
- Merged 3 existing departments in 2005
- Dept. of Communication
- Dept. of Computer Science
- Dept. of Information Systems
